My name is Kulsum, I’m a 20 something Muslim mom blogger with a mission that seems quite daunting. I want to be able to balance not only the work-life aspect that everyone talks about, but also add in the Islamic element too.
I’m a mother to a toddler and the next one coming soon in sha Allah. I have always loved kids because I feel they are the most truthful and honest humans. I live in Bangalore and work as a Digital Marketer in a travel company, parallel to running this space for a Muslim mom blogger.
All my life I have seen Muslim women face barriers in life that it hinders them from living their dreams. Maybe she wanted to be a designer or a businesswoman or a chef. But she got caught in the web of culture and family who never gave wings to her dreams. It’s not fair that although Islam has raised the status of the women, society and culture get in your way.
This drove me to make a career change and get into something I am passionate about and be the change I want to see.
I have an Engineering degree and worked for about two years in an upscale IT company. Although, really it was not my cup of tea since it kept me away from my family for the whole day. Thus after much anticipation, I decided to quit the Corporate life and explore my options. That was a very difficult and courageous decision I had to take and I pride myself in it. It took me a lot of time to figure out what I really wanted to do with life.
Although I knew 3 things for sure:
1. It had to be something related to Islam.
2. Something that kept me close to my family.
3. To help Muslim women break out of their shells.
A lot of research finally landed me the idea of being a digital marketer and Alhumdullilah it checks all my three requirements, right now I’m on a learning curve on building an online presence, brand development, business exposure on social media, website development, Ad placement and so much more.
The job is work from home solely, flexible Alhumdullilah and with my skills honed I hope to someday help Muslim women expand their dreams online. It might be a small part but it surely will give me a lot of satisfaction to see a happy Muslim mom/woman. Along with this, I would like to sprinkle a little bit of basic Islam into your daily life to strengthen yours as well as your family’s Imaan, because let’s face it, you’re the captain of the ship and that’s the most important element.
So join me as I do a work-life-deen balance and still have time to take care of myself.
This space is called Black Seedling, simply because our black children are blessings that need to be fertilized with affirmation, self-appreciation, and self-respect in a safe environment to grow.
It is a space, community or village and not a personal blog for only me to share my parenting journey. I would like it to feel like a group of like-minded folks sitting in a room helping and learning from each other. It is a community because I believe in the village approach to raising children. It is a community because I’m not arrogant enough to pretend I have all of the answers. It’s a community because we need to learn from others who are living this duality. This community will be a place where we can exist without explanation. It will be a place where we can share resources, questions, concerns, and tips.

I’m a mom of two boys and am currently pursuing my masters in marriage and family therapy. I worked as a teacher for a number of years and absolutely loved it, but wanted to follow my dream of becoming a counselor! I absolutely love to read! Since getting married and having kids, I found that all the books I was reading dealt with marriage and parenting. So, I figured I’d share whatever I was learning as I was reading and studying in school. I know most of us don’t find the time to read, so this is my way of helping anyone that would love to read these books or learn different concepts on their own, but don’t have the time! I currently post a video every Monday on my blog, youtube and Facebook page. So far, I’ve covered tantrums, punishment, discipline, love languages, and what kills a marriage. I have also done some workshops and am currently working on creating a workshop on effective family strategies, as well as working on a workbook for parenting.
